EV Tax Credit In Washington
Washington state residents purchasing a new qualifying electric vehicle in 2025 can claim the federal Clean Vehicle Credit of up to $7,500 on their federal income tax return, subject to income and vehicle price requirements. The credit can also be transferred to the dealer at the point of sale at participating locations.
Washington does not have a state income tax, so there is no state-level EV income tax credit. However, Washington exempts qualifying new electric vehicles from the state retail sales tax on the first $15,000 of the vehicle's selling price, which can provide meaningful savings at the time of purchase.
Washington buyers should file IRS Form 8936 for the federal credit and confirm the sales tax exemption is applied correctly by the dealer at the time of sale. Retaining the purchase agreement and dealer seller report will support the federal filing and any documentation requests.
