EV Tax Credit In North Carolina
North Carolina residents who purchase a new qualifying electric vehicle in 2025 can access the federal Clean Vehicle Credit of up to $7,500, subject to income limits and vehicle price caps established by the IRS. The credit is nonrefundable and reduces the buyer's federal tax liability for the year of purchase.
North Carolina does not currently offer a state income tax credit for EV purchases. The state previously had an alternative fuel vehicle credit that expired, and no replacement has been enacted as of 2025. Some North Carolina utility providers offer rebates for EV purchases or charging equipment, which buyers can explore separately from their tax filings.
North Carolina buyers should complete IRS Form 8936 when filing their federal return and retain the seller report issued by the dealer at the time of purchase. Confirming the vehicle's eligibility on the IRS's approved list before buying is the most reliable way to ensure the credit will be available.
