EV Tax Credit In New York
New York residents purchasing a new qualifying electric vehicle in 2025 can claim the federal Clean Vehicle Credit of up to $7,500, provided their income and the vehicle's price fall within IRS limits. The credit is applied against federal tax liability and is nonrefundable at the federal level.
New York State offers its own Drive Clean Rebate of up to $2,000 for eligible new EV purchases, administered through NYSERDA. This rebate is applied at the point of sale by participating dealers and is separate from the federal credit, meaning qualified buyers can potentially benefit from both incentives on the same vehicle purchase.
New York buyers should file IRS Form 8936 for the federal credit and confirm their vehicle is on the NYSERDA-approved list for the state rebate. Keeping the purchase agreement, dealer seller report, and any rebate confirmation documents will support both the federal filing and any state-level audit inquiries.
