Charitable Donation Deduction

The Charitable Donation Deduction lets taxpayers who itemize deductions on Schedule A reduce their taxable income by the value of qualifying contributions made to eligible nonprofit organizations. Cash donations, property donations, and in some cases out-of-pocket expenses incurred while volunteering can all qualify for the 2025 tax year.

To claim the deduction, contributions must be made to IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) organizations. Cash donations of any amount require a bank record or written acknowledgment from the charity, while non-cash donations valued above $500 require Form 8283, and donations above $5,000 generally require a qualified appraisal.

The deduction is only available to taxpayers who itemize, so it is most valuable when total itemized deductions exceed the standard deduction for the filer's status. Bunching multiple years of donations into a single tax year is a common strategy used to clear the standard deduction threshold and maximize the tax benefit.
